[spoiler]Have you ever wanted your own Army?

Well, inside today’s video I’m going to share with you one method I’m using to help build my own affiliate army to drive me loads of traffic to my new website.

Hi, Nick here from InstantProfitPeople.com where you can learn with me direct from the experts about Internet marketing and inside today’s video, I’m going to share with you one traffic building method that I’ve been learning and implementing that I’ve learned from my mentor.

So come inside and have a look.

Now we all struggle with getting traffic to our website and it’s something we have to work out creative ways to get people to come visit our website.

It can be tough as there’s a lot of competition out there but it’s not impossible. One method I’m using is to build an affiliate army to help drive me traffic and one way I’m doing that is by having everyone who signs up on my website become an affiliate automatically.

This means that once they download the interview, the transcript or the product they will automatically be able to then promote the product and receive financial commissions while doing so if a sale is made.

So how this works is this.

You have a product for sale or a product for free. You allow people to access that product and when they sign up to a membership to access the product they then are automatically registered as an affiliate. You then encourage those people to promote and let them know that there’s a financial reward for promoting if subsequent sales are made from people they refer.

It’s quite easy to get the computer programming to automatically set up the affiliate program all up for you so it’s not that technical if you just outsource and get someone to do it. Then you get everyone who has download the product to automatically become an affiliate then get a portion of them who are going to promote the product, and inside the member’s area, you give banners, email scripts and other tools they can use to help promote. Make it as easy as possible for them to promote your product. Give them scripts, pre-written articles whatever you can that will help them promote the product.

Think of it as a bit of a franchise so you go to McDonalds and you got one shop but if you got a number of shops you can make a lot more sales. So an affiliate army works like a franchise. You got a number of people all promoting your product so there’s a lot greater chance of making sales and building your business quickly.

So there we go. That’s one small tip I’m using to help build an affiliate army. There are other ways to do it which I will share with you other times but I hope you got something you could use out of that.

Stay tuned because next week I’m going to talk to you about a tool I’ve been using in gmail called canned responses. I’m going to show you how to set that up and how you can use it to save you some time in your business so you could spend it doing other things like getting out to the great outdoors.

See you online, see you next time!

Woah I feel like I’ve just run a marathon.

Hi Nick here from instant profit people.com where you can learn with me direct from the experts about internet marketing.

Welcome to my third video in Barry Wells’s video challenge. And I’m here on location in Noosa Queensland Australia. It’s a beautiful location and I’m to celebrate the launch of my new website the cut the crap interview.com. On this website I share information direct from the experts about how you can make money successfully online. Finally after what seems like a marathon run (and I’m not just talking about the run I just took),  my website is finally up and running, and open to the public so check it out and tell me what you think and leave some feedback below, I’d love to hear what you think, honest feedback.

Now in today’s video I’d like to share with you a little trick that I learnt to shrink the file size of the videos you make.  Now if you’re recording I high def or on your phone like I sometimes am, then it might come out in high quality and really large files. You might end up with a gig just for 5 minutes of video so I’ll show you how you can compress that down to save you time uploading and save space on your computer.

So let me show you how it’s done!

Shrinking the file size of large video files

Ok so this is a case where size does matter!

We all love free programs and the tool I’m sharing with you today is a free program called Handbrake and you can find it simply by typing in HANDBRAKE into google

Mac users get Elgato Turbo H264 HD super-fast file shrinking!

So this is Handbrake. Now, if you’re using a High Def video camera like the popular Cannon T3i then you’re really going to love this tool as it will help reduce the file size saving you space and time, without sacrificing quality.

Remember to check the YouTube preferred setting which will vary depending on whether you are recording in high definition or standard definition. Just search “YouTube suggested resolutions and bitrates”. This is what you’ll come up with.

Now I’ve found that after I edit the file in Windows Movie Maker and then run it though Handbrake I can easily reduce the size of the video by over 50% without any noticeable difference to the quality.

This is how I do it.

Back over in the Handbrake tool what you want to do is select the source file. And then the main thing you want to do is check “web optimised”, click video, ensure you use Use compression type H.264; a frame rate of 29.97 fps and go back to picture and simply press start.

And this is a 100mb file and within about 25 seconds it will convert this down to about 45mb which is just brilliant saving you half the time and space. And over on the side here you can have custom presets to create videos in formats for these sort of devices which is quite useful and you can also set your own!

Plus if you want to you can play around with the setting such as audio and change it to mono if you don’t really need stereo – that can also save a bit of space. You can also save the picture settings with “custom” for the size and aspect ratio but I really on suggest doing that if you’re really desperate to reclaim some space as it can affect the quality of your video.

The best part of this program is that you can preview what the changes are going to do to your video. So you click on the preview and you can see how it’s going to look.

It’s that simple, it’s a great program to use.

Now if you’re using a Mac I suggest you use Elgato Turbo H264 HD, I’ll include a link below, as it’s specifically designed for video rendering on a Mac and it’s quite powerful!

If you do have any questions about this or you do have any other software that you can recommend for mac or PC as well, feel free to share it down below because I love to know about these programs and I’m more than happy to share it with everyone else as well, too.

So there you go. A free simple free tool you can use to shrink the large file size of your videos and save time uploading and save space on your hard drive. Don’t forget to check out my new website, the links below,  and I’d love to hear what you think about it so leave me some feedback and like this video too.

Now stay tuned for next week’s video where I’ll share with you how I’m getting people on board to help promote my website and drive me traffic, you don’t wanna miss that.

Until then see you online! Bye bye.

Oh hi Nick here from Instant Profit People.com where you can learn with me direct from the experts about internet marketing.

Welcome to my second video In Barry Well’s month long video challenge and today I’m going to give you a behind the scenes sneak peek into my new free membership site launching later this month. And I’m going to show you why it’s not about the money money money!

Come and have a look inside.

Now most people will never make money online because they are trying to make money online. Confusing???  But that’s why we’re here you say?  But changing this mindset will be one of the most important things you will need to do if you want to have success online.

So as you know I’ve been learning from some very successful people.

And the basic formula for fast success is this:

Send targeted traffic  -> to a quality offer -> build a list of buyers -> do email marketing -> and have back end offers.

Instead of chasing money, focus on building a list of buyers, providing them quality products and follow up with email marketing.  The model itself is simple enough.

So let’s take a look at how I will be applying this model.

My Free Membership Site:

Now my site is nothing fancy and it doesn’t have to be, to be effective.

Here I have a squeeze page where I will be sending targeted traffic. Dean Holland and Alex Jeffrey’s have been helping behind the scenes to get this built.

From here people can opt in to receive a free transcript of a very comprehensive interview I did with hugely successful Bob Yeager about how to build a legitimate business online – quickly.

In it he gives some excellent advice on how to get started, how much it’s going to cost, the model for quick success and his secret for success. It’s aimed at people new to earning income online but there are some great tips for everyone.

Once signed up people will be presented with a very affordable one time offer which gives an audio version of the interview for busy people who want to save time and listen in their car or on their iPod and details on how to get access to Bobs training program that used to sell for $5000 – for free! So I think it’s a great one time offer. Of course the offer is available inside the members area but at a higher price.

Once signed up membership is automatic and free. Inside you can download the content, have a second chance to buy the upsell, and I’ve added in another great feature to help people who are just getting started to make instant profit. We all know that motivation is quickly lost when you don’t see reward for your effort. So I’ve created an affiliate area with prewritten emails and templates and personal links that people with no tech knowledge can easily use to send people to my website. If the people they refer end up purchasing the upsell the member will get a massive 75% of the sale! Many of you will already be familiar with this type of affiliate program but if not it’s essentially the same system that amazon uses but I pay 75% rather than 4%.

Why would I give away that much money? Well cuz it’s not about the money! My main focus is to give quality information in exchange for people’s email address. From there I intend to build a community that helps each other and who I can present relevant helpful related offers to.

This is exactly the same system used by top online marketers who earn a comfortable living online.

So there you go.

So what I’ve shared with you today is:

How I’ll send targeted traffic -> to a quality offer -> build a list of buyers -> do email marketing -> and have back end offers. And that what it looks like.

Now there’s more than one way to earn an income online so please leave me a comment on the model you use, what you find works well and if you think agree or disagree that it’s not about the money money money!

Don’t forget to like this video!

And I’ll see you online! Bye.

I also share with you 3 massive tips that you can use to help get your videos ranking number 1 in YouTube.

Transcript:

Hi Nick here from Instant Profit People . com where you can learn with me direct from the experts about internet marketing.

About 4 months ago I took a video challenge from Barry wells to do my first video, so you’ve probably seen that already and now I’ve joined his 4 video challenge in 4 weeks, so this will be the first of my 4 video challenges and I’ll put a link below in case you want to get a bit more information.

In this video I’m going to talk about 3 a massive things you can do to help get your videos ranking number one in YouTube and I’m also going to tell you about what I’ve been up to because you’ve probably noticed that my blog has been pretty quiet lately.

One of the reasons for that is that I just moved home and as you can see moved into this new place with a great view, check that out it looks pretty good, and I didn’t have internet for a little while but that didn’t stop me working on my product launch which is about to happen soon.

The big things I’ve been up to:

If you’re watching this on my blog you can probably see the logo above. That’s my new logo, it looks pretty good, and I got that done on Fiver for just 5 bucks! And Fiver you can get a lot of different things done for $5 and I’ll put a link below about that as well if you want to find out more information.

I’ve been working on my back end sales funnel for my upcoming product launch which is going to happen very soon, Finally!

And in the mean time I’ve found over 5000 potential affiliates that I’ll be contacting once I launch and they’ll be helping me to promote my product as well.

I’ve also set up a Facebook page and it’s almost complete. And I’ll be sharing that with you once its complete. It’s very close to being done.

And I’ve been finalising my product just before product launch which will hppen before the end of this video challenge so before the end of March I will be launching the product. Finally!

I also plan to do more videos after this challenge because I find it is a great way to connect with the audience and get a good exchange of information happening.

3 Massive tips to get your videos to rank number 1 on YouTube.

So now the big thing I want to talk about in this video or the 3 things I’d like to share with you about how you can get your videos ranking number one in YouTube.

  1. First tip: Make sure you have a transcript for your video. Upload and associate your transcript in YouTube with your video. YouTube will give you a tutorial on how to do this so just search for that. The key benefit is that YouTube scans your transcript, finds all the keywords and matches them to relevant searches so as people do searches that matches keywords in the transcript for the videos it will come up and help with the rankings.

  1. Second big tip: When you upload videos have the targeted keyword in the file name.  So uinstead of uploading video 1, upload something like “affiliate marketing with nick” for example. Then YouTube instantly knows what the video is about and it will show up better in search terms.

  1. 3rd tip is to get backlinks to your videos. You can use a software like “unique article wizard“ and link the videos in with your articles and promote online just like you would normally with back linking for your websites. So it’s very similar.

Now if you don’t have time to do this yourself , the article part in particular can take a bit of time, then you can use a service like “SEO Services” run by Tyrone Shum who taught me how to do the outsourcing which I’ve used for my business to get workers on board to help build my business quickly. So he runs a service called “SEO services” and I’ll put a link below as well and they take care of helping ranking your videos and blogs highly, or your website, or whatever matter it might be.

So yes some of these will be affiliate links and I may receive a commission for it, it’s important you know that, but if you don’t want to use the links you don’t have to you can just search the term yourself.

Now say tuned for my next video in Barry Well’s video challenge because my next video I’m going to give you a sneak peek behind my new membership site and I’m going to show you how it’s going to make me money even though it’s a free membership site. So you’re going to wanna see that. I’ve got some great stuff to share with you and I’ll do that in the next video challenge.

Until then see you online, thanks for watching, bye bye.

Useful & free productivity apps! – Part 2

Rescue timeHi there,

This is the second of my 2 part blog post on useful and free productivity apps that I’ve discovered and integrated into my business systems over the last month.

In my last post (useful & free productivity apps!) I shared with you a great email add on application called “Rapportive” that you can use in your business as an excellent tool to help you know your customer at a glance and deliver better service and increase sales.

Today I’d like to share with you a second tool that I have found really valuable in increasing productivity in my work.

Free productivity tools to manage your time:

If your looking to make money online, grow a business or really if your looking to achieve any particular goal in your life then you will know how important time management is. It can be the difference between success and failure or at the very least it can be the difference between being able to live the lifestyle you choose or being tied to your tasks.

People who learn to properly manage their time can achieve financial stability, reduction of stress and an increase in productivity (you get a lot more done in a lot less time). Time management give you a greater chance of moving up the success ladder!

So I’d like to share with you to one app that has really helped me manage my time better!

Rescue time:

How many times have you been distracted from a task by an interesting news article, a picture, that flashing orange MSN message box, a Facebook update or a tweet? Before you know it you’re reading about African safari’s rather than the best bank account which is what you were originally searching for!

Time management is an integral part of business 101. Supposing each day that you work for 2 hours on productive tasks without distraction then in one week you could achieve more than someone who is not focused could in one month. In one month you could do more then they could in a year! No joke! What have you achieved in the last year? What has Bill Gates achieved in the last year?

Rescue time’s free time tracking software will help you see exactly where you are spending your time and attention and will help you spend your time more effectively. They have a comprehensive free for ever version (the one I use) and a paid version with added functionality. The functions I talk about below are all part of the free version.

Features:

  • Background time tracking. Rescue time sits in the background and will track every thing you do – right down to specific websites (although you can opt out of that feature – for those of you that may be worried then let me ease your mind. It will not track adult websites unless you specifically opt in to that! hahah).

  • Stops when you stop. Rather than having to start and stop the program it will realise when you’ve walked away from the computer and stop recording time spent working. You can even have it ask you what you were doing when you return (although I think this is part of the paid version). This is good for people who want to track time spent away from the computer on activities such as meetings. (Yes you can still turn the program off at any time if you want).

  • Use it on multiple computers – one report. This is great if you work across more than one computer but want to track per user rather than per pc.

  • Detailed web based reporting. Access up to the minute reports at any time. Reports are highly customisable so you can see productivity per hour or day and even lets you drill down to the types of activities you spent your time on. I found this particularly useful to work out what my most productive and least productive times are. Late afternoons were usually my least productive times so I factored in breaks around this time. I also became more aware of what I was doing in the afternoons and so I consciously became more focused.

  • Daily and weekly efficiency email. This makes it easy to track your progress even if you forget to log into the website. It also shows you how you stack up to other people’s efficiency in general and I found myself wanting to better my own productivity score and be better than the average.

Benefits:

  • Mindfulness & Productivity. For me the biggest benefit was becoming more mindful of what I was spending my time on. I was far lessFree Productivity tools likely to go on link adventures all over the Internet, turned off my chat during work times, and stayed away from other more exciting media until I completed my tasks. The reports help categorise what you spend your time on (email, social networks, etc) and so you start to get a great idea of where your day goes. Being able to see where I wasted and made use of my time helped me identify what to do less of and I should do more of. I started to get a lot more done in less time.

  • Estimate project times. If you want to set up a new Facebook fan page,  establish a new niche site, do some keyword research or write a new eBook you can use Rescue Time to help plan how long it will take to get your project to market based on historical data. This can be particularly useful if you outsource as then you know how long it will take to get a project up and running. Which leads me to another benefit I found:

  • Monitor your workers productivity. As you know I’ve hired Megan who is working full time for me so I can expand my business. I asked Megan to install Rescue Time and each day she send me a copy of the report which shows how she spent her time. It can be used for billing (to track hours worked) and it can be used again to measure how long it will take to have your workers get a project to market. It also provides peace of mind knowing what work gets done.

If you’d like to see more about the product simply visit their website: Rescue Time

I hope you gain as much benefit from these 2 Useful & free Productivity apps that I have talked about here. I have come across plenty of programs and resources lately but these 2 have been a stand out for me.

Before you go please leave a comment about free tools you use in your business or about tools you wish you had to make your life easier!

See you online!

Nick.

Useful & free productivity apps!

To DoOk so over the last month I’d set myself some pretty big goals… What were they you ask?

1. Product Completion

2. Hire a virtual assistant

3. Auto-responder email scripting for post launch.

While I haven’t completed all of the tasks (the first one is reliant on other people and is still underway) I’ve made some great achievements and come across some great ‘productivity apps’ online!

Firstly I’d like to give a big welcome to Megan, my new virtual assistant! Megan has been on board since midway through last week, successfully getting the job ahead of over 50 other applicants.

Within 1 day of posting a position description for a virtual assistant on www.onlinejobs.ph I received over 25 application. That’s more than 1 an hour! I also posted the position description on oDesk (freelance workers for hire) but I found Onlinejobs was better for my needs in this instance.

About 7 made it through the pre-selection test and questionnaire and gained an interview on Skype and shortly after I offered Megan the job and she accepted, the rest, as they say, is history!  Please send your special welcome to Megan in the comments section and help make her feel welcome!

If you haven’t already guessed, hiring someone the right way can be a lot of work but I expect it can also be very rewarding. I now have someone who can work full time in my business 5 days a week! That’s more than a 500% productivity increase. In fact last Friday Megan got through as much work on 1 task as I would usually have done in a week! But more importantly it will leave me more time to work ON my business rather than IN it.

The other thing I found was that most of the people who applied were willing to start work the very next day. Recruitment online is a much faster process than my experience with it offline but then again that seems to be true for most aspects of doing business online!

Email scripting is coming along nicely. I’ve got about 10 in place but they need a bit of tweaking, and I’ve continued to do more training modules myself as well as provide training to Megan.

The only thing that needs a push along now is my product launch which is still lagging :(

So what are these productivity apps?

The first I’d like to introduce you to is Rapportive!

Rapportive shows you everything about your contacts right inside your inbox. Its a free add on for   FirefoxSafari,   Mailplane, and  Chrome browsers and works by identifying your contacts in Gmail (google email) and bringing you information about them. It can link you to their facebook, linkedin, twitter profiles and bring you basic information such as image, location, and job role instantly.

I’m guessing its called Rapportive because it is reporting on rapport. Or is it supportive of rapport? I don’t know!

Rapportive is extremely powerful for business who want to know their customers and provide better service. For instance if one of my customers email me and they are on my auto-responder list it will show me which list they are on (I can identify the type of information they are after), where they are located and even link me to their social media profile.

Instantly you can know who your customer is meaning you can deliver better and personalised customer service in response to their email. Imagine it as like a mini report that says who your customer is and what they like – for every customer.Productivity apps

It was also very handy during the selection stage of recruitment. I could get a good idea of the character of the person who was applying for a job with me.

Rapportive only takes a few seconds to return the information and even lets you add notes instantly on their Rapportive profile adding a new instant dimension to customer relations management. I highly recommend this browser add on and the makers of the software have gone to great lengths to protect peoples privacy at the same time. Any information returned is information that is already publicly available.

Check it out for yourself. Click here to Add Rapportive to Gmail

Stay tuned:

I came across another great productivity app that can help your business but you’re going to have to stay tuned for the next part. In the mean time please share with everyone in the comments section below about some great productivity apps that you’ve come across! Don’t forget to give a big welcome to Megan!

What’s a QR code and how can it grow your sales!

QR Code for www.instantprofitpeople.com

QR code for my site

Have you seen these fuzzy pictures around the place that look like a picture on a smashed 1998 nokia phone screen? That’s a QR Code and many people are still unsure about what a QR code is.

What’s a QR Code?

QR stands for Quick Response and it is a 2 dimensional type of matrix barcode. Simply put, its a barcode and it can only be read by a scanner (a smart phone with a camera will do) which you can quite easily
download to any smart phone.

The scanner interprets the unique code and usually sends the person to some information. Basically it’s a way for people to interact with offline print media and link them directly to more related information about the topic online.

What Are QR Codes Used For?

QR Codes are used to link to many things including:

  • Website or other internet pages
  • Event details
  • Product details
  • Social media profiles (Facebook, Google-plus, Twitter)
  • Videos
  • Online competitions
  • Special offers
  • A Coupon
  • Locations
  • Contact cards with contact information that can be saved
  • Much much more. Basically anything you can link to online!

Starting to see the potential??

So are business’s and you can expect to see them popping up a bit more in the offline world. Surprisingly Japan has been using them for some time but they are only really just starting to take off in the Western nations now.

How Do I Get a Scanner And How Much Is It Going To Cost?

Simply go to the App store (iPhones) or Marketplace (Android) and search for ‘QR reader’. Most QR scanners are FREE and will come with a range of added benefits including a QR Composer (so you can make your own) and other features that tie in nicely with the reader.

When you see a QR Code simply go into the App on your phone, point the camera at the barcode and press scan (your really just taking a picture and the
software “reads” information in the image). Within seconds it will link to the coupon, promotion, video or some type of content.

How to make your own QR code

Fortunately QR code’s are easy to make! Site like Kaywa.com let you type in a link and instantly generate a QR code. It even gives you a code you can imbed if you can’t be bothered cutting and pasting the image.

Other sites let you incorporate colours and pictures. You can really personalise your QR code and make it stand out from the crowd!

Case Study 1:

(We’ll start with me!) I am about to launch a product and I want to look at some alternative ways to market it offline in places where my
market will be. I’ve decided a QR code represents technology and represents my product theme well. Having a QR Code will basically allow me to send people to an opt-in page right from wherever I put up the poster and capture their email instantly.

The user experience will be instant access to a free product that they can access on the spot in a unique way. It’s an engaging experience for the customer and a new way for me to promote my business to people who otherwise may never have found out about my products and services.

What is a QR Code

Case study 2:

I recently went to a coffee shop and as I was making my purchase I noticed a QR code. This shop had worked out a clever use for the codes. Basically they had linked in with other independent coffee shops who must all share the code.

Each time you buy a coffee you can scan the code and it links you to a loyalty website that records your purchase and you get the 8th drink free. They also have special coffee discount coupons on there from time to time. No need to carry a loyalty card around any more!

Case study 3:

You might see a movie poster at a bus stop for the latest movie. On it is a QR code. Scanning it will link you to session times and the ability to purchase movie tickets and merchandise direct from your phone.

The opportunities are endless.

With the increasing use of smart phones and internet integration in to basically everything, the rise and popularity of QR codes can only increase. The technology is mature and has actually been around for some time.
The potential uses are almost unlimited!

Make sure you’re at the forefront of this technology and think about how you can incorporate it into your marketing plan.

Tips:

To see some colourful and creative QR codes Google ‘Adidas QR code’ and ‘Calvin Klein QR Code’ BUT only after you leave a comment below telling me how you could use it in your next campaign!

My Mini break on an island paradise!

Hi again

If you saw my last post “I found this video you should watch” then you would know that I recently had a mini 5 day holiday to reward myself for all the hard work on building my online business that I’ve been doing.

I wanted to share these holiday pics and a video with you so you can see first hand how beautiful the Whitsunday’s in Northern Queensland is! I stayed at Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island.

Check this out!

I think what makes this beach so special is the quality of the sand and the excellent natural condition of the island and beach. The sand was cool (even in full midday sun) and almost iridescent.

Lifestyles of the rich and famous

There is another Island (Haymen Island) but that is for the likes of Angelina Jolie and Russell Crowe where you get your very own butler when your on the island and the service workers use tunnels so that holiday makers wake to feel like they are on a deserted tropical island! Maybe I’ll get to go there when business is booming!

Speaking of booming… I have some great tips to share with you next week on what I’ve learned about QR Codes and how I plan to use them for off line marketing! Stay tuned for more…

But before you go… Tell me about your achievements and how you have rewarded yourself!

I found this video you should watch

Hey hope your doing well…

Over the last week I took a mini holiday and found this inspirational video that I really like… Let me know what you think

Do you ever compare yourself to more successful people and then think your not successful? I have a habit of doing that – like when I play pool (billards) with friends in a mini competition and I rank in the middle of the group. Half are better than me, half are worse. But I felt like I failed! :(

Instead I think I’m going to start running my own race and look at how much better I’ve gotten over the last few months of playing. The same can be said for my online business.

In fact I started changing the way I thought about it as of last week! As a reward for all the hard work I’ve been putting in and all my achievements to date (this blog from scratch, a huge amount of training, a large number of potential affilliates, new friendships, an interview with a highly successful person and a new second website almost completed) I decided to reward myself with a mini 5 day break up in the Whitsundays, in north Queensland, Australia.

I’ll be posting some pictures from the trip later in the week!

What did you think of the video? What successes have you had lately (no matter how small)!

How I got a mobile/cell version of my website running in under 5 minutes

How to get a mobile version of your website

Going mobile...

Have you ever looked at a website on your mobile? I know I have… a lot! And there is nothing worse than not being able to read it properly on your phone.

Maybe your phone is optimised to fit the page to screen but it can still be a pain in the ass to read!

With more and more people surfing on wireless mobile devices (mobile/cell phones, tablet pc’s) I thought I would set up a version of my site that could be easily read by those devices to make sure it was as accessable as possible.

Also I plan to do some offline advertising for my new website and product (developers tell me it should be ready to go by next week) using a QR code. More on QR Codes in another post.

How it works

A mobile version of your site is part of your site. When people arrive at your site your website will check to see how they are arriving. If it can see they are arriving on a mobile device it will display the version of the site optimised for that device.

There are actually several ways to create a mobile version of your site. I will show you how to do this with a WordPress site and plugin. If you want to find other ways or programs to help you do this (maybe you don’t have a WordPress site) then check out this useful post on Mashable “8 Tools For Easily Creating a Mobile Version of Your Website“.

I will be showing you a different tool all together then any of the 8 listed above.

Tools you will need:

You will be able to do this one on your own. The only tool you will need is the “WordPress Mobile Pack” a wordpress plugin.

This plugin will easily create a customisable mobile version of your website and has added added features such as:

  • A mobile ad widget to easily enable mobile ads with AdMob or Google’s Mobile Adsense (for those wanting to be able to make money through advertising on their mobile version.
  • A mobile admin panel, that allows the blog managers to access the admin interface via a mobile device, with simplified access to the most common features such as editing a post or approving comments.
  • A barcode widget which adds a barcode to your desktop site so that devices with a suitable reader can quickly bookmark your mobile site, or deep link within it.
  • And heaps more

How to install and set up:

Simply go into your “plugins” page in your WordPress account. Search for “WordPress Mobile Pack” and click Install now.

Once installed you will be taken to the plug in settings and can edit as you please.

If you are unsure how to do this please watch the video below:

The cool thing about this plugin is that it also gives people reading the mobile version the option to view the normal non mobile optimis

Why go mobile?

In Australia alone I’m often reading articles about how our mobile (or Cell as America calls it) networks are struggling to keep up with the growing demand for mobile phone data usage.

They can’t upgrade the networks as fast as the data usage keeps growing! More and more mobile plans are sold with data allowance then ever before and more and more people are accessing the net on them.

I recently started working back in the CBD (downtown) for a couple of months in a new role. I haven’t had to catch the train for about 2 years so I found it very funny to see that MOST of the people on the train are heads down on their mobile phones (me too – I find it a great way to get small tasks done on my site or listen to a podcast training session!).

So it’s a nobrainer that you want your site accessible on these devices. In fact I think most business will be done on these devices in the future.

What do you think?

Do you use any other tools to do this or set up your mobile site another way? What do you think about the future of mobiles and the internet? Leave a comment and share the knowledge!
